September Approaching

A research phase for a mid-length experimental documentary exploring the complex, often ambivalent relationship between humans and animals. Set within Gharib Veterinary Hospital, one of the city’s oldest, the film investigates the duality of care and control, affection and domination. In Iran, this dynamic takes on an additional layer of complexity, given that keeping animals as pets is potentially criminalized due to their perceived impurity under Islamic law. Using these interactions as a lens, the film examines how power manifests in the lives of both humans and animals, drawing parallels to the ways political structures limit individual autonomy and personal freedoms in Iran.

The film moves fluidly between the veterinary hospital, the streets of Tehran, and domestic spaces, creating a fragmented narrative that blends observational footage, fictionalized elements, personal testimony, and archival material.
